Like a personal computer, advanced electronics like those integrated on a hard disk or optical drive also have a CPU (a.k.a. Micro controller) located on the logic-board. Firmware can be compared to the personal computers operating system. Most drives allow the firmware to be updated to fix bugs or enhance features.
