S.M.A.R.T (Self Monitoring And Reporting Technology)

S.M.A.R.T attempts to predict drive failure. Unfortunately how the actual prediction is done is 'vendor specific'. In theory the vendor can return an 'always OK' status and comply with the ATA standard. Quite some drives also return attribute values. Interpreting these values is difficult since the attribute values are not standardized and that there are only a few vendors that have published lists containing the values.
