4.0 Installing and using WTY-QLaunch
4.1 Installing WTY-QLaunch
To install QLaunch just start QLaunch.exe. Follow the directions given by the installation program.
4.2 Uninstalling WTY-QLaunch
Use the standard software uninstall window from the control panel. The un-install program will remove the registry entries and the optional startup group link.
The registry keys used by QLaunch are:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\QLaunch\DisplayName
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\QLaunch\UninstallString
The uninstall program will prompt you to remove the files manually. To simplify this task the QLaunch application folder
will be opened.
4.3 Using WTY-QLaunch
After installing QLaunch a link to notepad (or possibly another program that handles the .txt files on your system) is visible in the status bar.
If you click on it with the left mouse button the text document is opened in an editor.
If you click on it with the right mouse button the QLaunch menu pops up.
This menu will contain two default links which are created in the installation procedure.
If you click on a link with the left mouse button the link is opened in the associated program.
If you click on a link with the right mouse button a menu pops up.
In the popup menu mentioned above, you see the menu item 'open folder 0', if you click on this item a folder is opened that contains links to the files that are currently visible in the menu. You can drag links to this folder to add them to the menu (under 'folders' you can find links that you might want to use). Deleting links will remove them from the menu. QLaunch will use the associated viewer to launch the file when it is started, so you can drag every file type to this column. All links in the folder will be visible in the menu for column 0. Note that a menu can contain a maximum of 16 links.
The sequence of the links can be ordered in the menu by dragging the icons to another position. The sequence information is stored in the 'qlaunch.dat' file created in the column directory. Do not manually alter this file, deleting it will result in the recreation of the file by QLaunch, the prior defined sequence is then of course lost.
You can also add folders. Go to the menu, 'folders', 'QLaunch', here you see folder '0'. You can add folders '1' to '15' (maximum of 16 folders).
There are some points to keep in mind:
- The folder should be numeric and the folder 'below' it should exist.
E.g. when you create folder '3' it will not be seen by QLaunch unless folders '0', '1' and '2' already exist.
- After adding a folder you have to use the 'restart' button in the menu to add the new menu to the status bar. Restarting your computer, or closing and restarting QLaunch will also work.
- It is not possible to start the menu from empty folders.
4.4 Known issues
4.4.1 Icon colors are distorted
The status bar in certain versions of windows uses 16 colors. This means high color icons will be dithered. You can solve this 'problem' by selecting the link properties (right mouse click in the explorer window) and change it to a 16 color icon.
4.4.2 Icon is not replaced when changing it trough the link properties dialog
When the icon is changed through the link properties it is updated in the explorer window but not in Qlauch. This is a known issue in certain recent windows versions.
You can solve the problem by disabling the Indexing service for the lnk file using the following steps:
- Use the 'open folder' menu item to open the explorer folder containing the link file.
- Right click on the required lnk file and select properties.
- On the properties dialog select the 'general' tab and click on the 'advanced' button.
- Make sure the entry 'For fast searching, allow indexing service to index this file' is unchecked.
